A photographer whose equipment was stolen was able to recover all the items thanks to an unusual help: location provided by AirTag, Apple’s smart tracker that keeps the owner up to date on an object’s whereabouts.
The incident took place in Australia. with graham tightsHe was on vacation in the south of the country and raided his car while it was parked near the hotel where he was staying.
The bandits took approx. 10 thousand Australian dollars — $7,000 or BRL 36,000 with direct currency conversion — on equipment including cameras, tripods, batteries, storage, a GoPro, and a laptop.
Monitoring via search app
Both camera backpack and laptop had AirTags attached and using the app Find My cell phone, the victim was able to quickly track the location of the equipment. Luckily, the criminals were in another room in the same hotel and were arrested after Tait called the police. The photographer managed to recover all the belongings, including his own wallet.
Launched by Apple in April 2021 to track objects like bags and keys, AirTags are more frequently in the news for controversial reasons: Trackable Bluetooth tags are already being used to track women and even select cars to be stolen later.
