On his English-language channel, Telegram founder Pavel Durov gave a graph of the distribution of user shares among the popular Fortune instant messengers and focused on the fact that his brainchild became the second in the world, second only to WhatsApp*.

Telegram has become the second most popular messenger in the world – Pavel Durov

“Over the past 5 years, Telegram has surpassed Facebook Messenger* to become the most popular cloud messaging app. Telegram is now second only to WhatsApp and is closing the gap every year. No wonder our competitors are concerned!” Durov wrote.

According to a chart from Fortune, the proportion of Telegram users has increased from 5% in 2018 to 31% in 2022.

WhatsApp*, as you can see in the same graph, has fallen from 51% to 44% during the same time.

Facebook Messenger* is also falling from 43% to 21% in five years.
