The owner of the UK’s largest chemical company, Jim Ratcliffe, has made an official offer to buy Manchester United football club. The potential deal was not disclosed, but it could top the current league record of £4.25bn.

Reuters reports on Ratcliffe’s proposal, citing a company statement. Ineos says he wants to make the English team “a beacon of a modern, progressive and fan-focused approach to ownership”.

The British company “would like to invest in Manchester United to make it the number one club in the world again.”

Manchester United’s current owners, the American Glazer family, said in November that they were open to considering options for Manchester United’s future, including increasing investment and selling their 69% stake.

Earlier, the son of the former Qatari prime minister, Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, told the FT that he had submitted an offer to acquire Manchester United. According to Reuters, Saudi Arabia is also showing interest in the sports asset.

In 2022, Forbes valued Manchester United at $4.6 billion. The Manchester team is the third most valuable football club in the world. Jim Ratcliffe’s fortune is estimated at $15.3 billion. The businessman also owns the French soccer club Nice and the Swiss Lausanne.

In March 2022, Roman Abramovich sold London’s Chelsea for a record £4.25bn. The buyer was a consortium led by American billionaire Todd Boely.
