Shortwave, an initiative founded by former Google employees to “resurrect” the old Inbox service as a new email manager, has taken another step towards making life easier for app users. According to a post on its blog this Monday (27), the company is rolling out a beta version called Smart Digest. Integrates OpenAI’s GPT-3 into the app to summarize emails in Gmail Inbox.
The new “smart digests” option will be free for all Shortwave users during the launch period and promises unprecedented management of your “traditional” Gmail account. The idea is to save time by reducing long threads and summarizing important information in the main content.
According to the tech company, the new feature aims to “pave the way for the future of AI-enabled email,” an inevitable trend with recent advances in chatbots. In this sense, Shortwave aims to be at the forefront of fundamental changes for email, which is still considered the universal productivity tool.
Smarter Gmail
Smart Summaries is everyone’s dream come true back to work after the Carnival holiday send a “TL;DR” to each thread containing only the essentially critical information users need.
The summaries will list information such as what the email is about, who is involved, and what action should be taken. The user can decide whether or not to open the email to read it in full.
“Summaries” can also be shared with others when emails are forwarded, saving time and making life easier for business partners and colleagues. The function also uses other languages, i.e. get a summary of the already translated topic. Finally, you can ride Smart Reply, Gmail’s smart reply, to forward any digest produced by GPT-3 within Shortwave.
With the proprietary artificial intelligence service Bard going public in the coming months, it’s unlikely that Google will be interested in adding OpenAI’s GPT-3 to Gmail. This way, the Shortwave upgrade can be a great opportunity To start preparing for the effective integration of AI into your daily life.
