New skills are added to Amazon’s virtual assistant every day, and it’s not uncommon to hear its voice in robots and vacuum cleaners, not to mention the thousands of third-party apps that use it to activate with speech recognition. And while these voice search features were once limited to a few phones, the Alexa app now works on many Android and iPhone devices.

How to set up Alexa on Android or iPhone

You can get Alexa to work on all of your compatible devices by installing the Amazon Alexa app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

If you’ve never used an Alexa-enabled device before, it’s worth spending a few minutes setting it up. Tap the three-line menu icon in the lower right corner of the screen to access the following:

  • routineA: Alexa lets you set up a series of actions to perform at specific times or under specific circumstances, so you can use a single command to turn on the lights, tune into a radio station, turn on the heating, and more with a single command. The app recommends popular sequences like “Alexa, good morning” or “Alexa, I’m home.”
  • reminders: You can set meeting or meeting reminders at specific times or days, or just ask Alexa to remind you of something regular like taking a pill every morning.
  • alarm clocks and timers– You can add an alarm directly from the app or customize the alarms and timers you have set on your Alexa-enabled device; such as canceling or setting a timer.
  • lists and notes– Here you will see the items you have added (via voice command) to your Amazon shopping and to-do list from the Alexa app.
  • skills and games– Explore, enable, and manage thousands of third-party apps that enhance Alexa’s functionality across categories such as Business & Finance, Food & Drink, Health & Fitness, and more. See which ones you have installed by clicking the “Your Skills” button in the top right corner of the screen.
  • Parameter: This menu allows you to customize your profile, location, and preferences such as music and podcasts, TV and videos, sports, reminders, photos, notifications, and more.
  • To learn more– Select this option to open a drop-down menu with other options you can customize such as Locator, Workout, What to Try, and Blueprints that allow you to create your own skills.

You can tap the three-line menu icon and select Settings to view various Alexa-enabled devices and set names for them, as well as locations, time zones, and preferences for temperature and distance units.

Amazon Alexa phones

Amazon is currently building Alexa into a range of smartphones, and they come in two flavors: hands-free and push-to-talk. With hands-free models, you can tell Alexa to play music, read the news, and check the weather wherever you are. On push-to-talk models, you must first press the power button twice to request something and Alexa will respond.

Current handsfree models on sale include OnePlus 10 Pro, 9 Pro and 8 Pro, Moto G7, LG G8 ThinQ, Moto Z4, Moto G6, Moto Z3, Moto Z3 Play, LG V35 ThinQ and Sony Xperia. 1. Push-to-talk phones include Moto G7 Power, Moto G7 Play, Motorola One Action, LG Stylo 5 and Moto G6 Play.

Older HTC U11, Huawei Mate 9 and Moto X4 also support hands-free voice search. The Mate 9 was the first phone to support Alexa natively, and the HTC U11 was the first phone to allow voice commands from Alexa with the microphone always on. You can say “Alexa” followed by a command even if the phone’s screen is off. Alexa on the Mate 9 and U11 behaves similarly to Amazon Echo speakers, though apps can’t do everything that Echo speakers can.

What can you do with Alexa on your smartphone?

The Alexa app can show the time, provide a weather report, or provide daily summaries of sports and news from NPR, CNN, the Associated Press, and other sources. Here are some Alexa compatible commands:

  • Alexa, what time is it?
  • Alexa, what’s the latest news?
  • Alexa, flip a coin.
  • Alexa, how much is 10 dollars worth in pounds?
  • Alexa, what is 15 times 32?
  • Alexa, how is the weather outside today?
  • Alexa, create [X] minutes.
  • Alexa, add milk to my shopping list.
  • Alexa, what’s on my schedule today?
  • Alexa, start your seven-minute workout.
  • Alexa tell a bedtime story [nombre de tu hijo].

The Alexa app is compatible with Amazon Kindle and Audible services. If you say, “Alexa, read my Kindle book,” you’ll hear an audiobook recording or text-to-speech of the latest addition to your Amazon library. When prompted for “Alexa, read my audiobook,” the assistant asks you to start or resume any audiobook you’ve purchased from Audible.

You can connect various household and electronic devices to the Alexa app, not to mention control your cars. If you have a Philips Hue or Samsung SmartThings device, Alexa can turn on the lights or change channels on your TV. You can remotely start cars, change the interior temperature, run on-demand diagnostics and alerts, search for destinations, and locate your car remotely using the Hyundai Blue Link platform. Here is a list of Alexa compatible devices.

The Alexa and Amazon shopping platforms are tightly integrated, allowing you to order anything on Amazon Prime, including Amazon Fresh groceries, non-perishable Amazon Prime Pantry groceries, and items with two-hour delivery. You can check the status of packages that are due to arrive with a simple voice command: “Alexa, where are my things?” Investing in Alexa software will also bring you special offers on any number of products and services that appear throughout the year from numerous companies.

Many apps are part of the Amazon Skills Collection, which means that Alexa can activate these apps using voice recognition. One particularly useful is the Chef app, which can read recipes, send shopping lists, and keep track of expiration dates. The Uber and Lyft apps can request rides to your approximate location, and the Fitbit app can tell you how many steps you’ve taken. The Capital One app shows your bank balance, while the Dominos, Pizza Hut, and Grubhub apps let you deliver groceries.
