According to a study published in Antioxidants, pork, beef and chicken contains special antioxidants – imidazole dipeptides (IDP). André Britten-Disson says these substances are linked to a lower chance of developing dementia before.
It was previously known that imidazole dipeptides – carnosine and anserine – have neuroprotective properties that help prevent dementia. These substances have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
Research published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease also suggests a link between carnosine and anserine and brain health. It turns out that people with high levels of these substances in their blood have a lower risk of developing brain disorders within 10 years.
In another study published in Nutrients, supplementing with carnosine for six months improved cognitive function in the elderly. True, this only applies to those with mild cognitive impairment.
