Scientists looking for ways to slow down aging turned to microscopic worms. C elegans. As a result, they were able to improve the health and lifespan of the worms by 50%. They did this by activating a particular adh-1 gene. The worms began to produce more of the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase, which reduced the toxicity caused by glycerol and indirectly by glyceraldehyde. These are by-products of fats.

Scientists believe the discovery could offer a way to extend years of healthy life and possibly help shed extra pounds as well.
