Advances in implantable neurotechnology and cell therapy offer potentially effective treatments for people with nerve damage outside of the brain and spinal cord. However, there are also disadvantages. Transplanted neurons may have difficulty making functional connections. And the electrodes cannot function effectively without healthy worker cells to interact with. In addition, current neurotechnologies do not allow interaction with different types of neurons responsible for performing different functions.

A possible solution to these problems lies in a biohybrid device that will combine human stem cells with bioelectronics to create a more efficient neural interface. This is what researchers from the University of Cambridge have done by creating a revolutionary biohybrid device that can integrate into body tissues.

The new device could help amputees as they try to regenerate neurons and repair neural circuit damage caused by trauma or amputation.

Further testing will be required before the device can be used on humans.
