It is worth noting that the new development does not achieve as high an energy density as a lithium-ion battery, but its capacity does not decrease irreversibly over time: it is “reproducible”, which can provide an extremely long service life.

In addition, oxygen-ion batteries can be produced without rare elements and from non-combustible materials. A patent application has already been filed. The oxygen-ion battery could be an excellent solution for large energy storage systems, such as storing electrical energy from renewable sources.

The new battery concept is not designed for smartphones or electric vehicles, as an oxygen-ion battery only achieves about a third of the energy density of lithium-ion batteries, as noted above, and operates at temperatures between 200 and 400°C.
