The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has proposed several changes that it says will make it easier to cancel recurring service subscriptions.
Here are the basic requirements:
• a subscription should be as easy to cancel as it is to subscribe; for example, if you can register online, you should be able to cancel your subscription on the same site in the same number of steps
• Merchants should ask users if they would like additional features if they cancel their subscription (they cannot be forced); if the customer refuses, you must immediately display the item to unsubscribe.
• sellers should be reminded in advance that the subscription will end soon and should be canceled if the user does not intend to renew it
The FTC will take this into account shortly to adjust them in the future.
