To conduct the study, experts from Kyoto University and the University of California at Los Angeles examined data from 3,100 US adults. The researchers found that people who walked at least 8,000 steps one to two days a week were 14.9% less likely to die within 10 years. Those who walked 8,000 steps or more three to seven times a week had a 16.5% lower risk of death.
Walking 8,000 steps once or twice a week was particularly effective for participants over 65.
The number of days a week a person takes 8,000 or more steps is associated with a lower risk of death from all causes as well as heart disease.
