They hypothesized that a patient’s circadian rhythm could influence their cancer risk, diagnosis, and likelihood of recovery.

Circadian rhythms are known to control most cellular functions associated with cancer development, including gene expression, immune function, and cell repair.

Chronic disruption of circadian rhythms, such as poor sleep patterns, jet lag, or shift work, can predispose to health problems, including cancer.

The rate at which cancer cells leave the primary tumor and enter the bloodstream fluctuates rhythmically throughout the day, but this time varies between cancers. Breast tumors are more likely to metastasize at night, and prostate cancer and multiple myeloma peak at very different times.

According to the scientists, this information can be used to give chemotherapy and immunotherapy at the most appropriate time, potentially increasing the effectiveness of the treatment and reducing side effects.
