The national data protection authority said it would immediately block OpenAI, the US company that developed the popular tool, and investigate the processing of Italian users’ data. The order is temporary until the company complies with EU privacy law.
Italian officials said OpenAI had no legal basis to justify “massive collection and storage of personal data … for training algorithms”. The regulator recalled that last week ChatGPT suffered a data breach that exposed user chats and payment information. The authorities added that OpenAI does not verify the age of users.
OpenAI has 20 days to explain how it plans to bring ChatGPT into compliance with EU privacy rules or face a fine of up to 4% of its revenue.
