The system determines which tweets appear in the recommendations of social network users. When a Twitter page is refreshed, the platform selects the top 1,500 from hundreds of millions of tweets, and the most tweets come from users the account holder follows and the tweets are recommended for. The release of the code led to more questions about how Twitter works, and users flagged variables like “author_is_democrat” and “author_is_republican” in the code.
One Twitter engineer claims these tags are used for metrics only: “We keep track of how often we deliver tweets from these authors and how often their tweets influence users.”.
