He speculates that it was part of a discarded ISS battery pallet that NASA thought would burn up completely upon re-entry. Luckily, no one was injured and investigators are now trying to determine the source of the fragment.

In 2021, the space agency launched debris into space because it believed it would burn up when it reentered Earth’s atmosphere (though some were convinced otherwise).

The piece, a giant 2.9-ton old battery pallet—the heaviest piece of space debris intentionally dropped from the ISS—completed its atmospheric burn over the Gulf of Mexico a few weeks ago.

Coincidence or not, on March 8, someone reported that a cylindrical object weighing approximately 1 kg struck the roof and double floor of his home in Naples, Florida.

Alejandro Otero tweeted photos of the object flying inside his home, thankfully without harming any of its residents.
