The review authors analyzed 107 articles examining the relationship between alcohol and mortality. About five million people from different countries participated in them. Many of these studies turned out to contain errors and biases that skewed the results.

After correcting for the studies’ shortcomings, the researchers found that the obvious benefits of moderate alcohol consumption were significantly reduced or disappeared.

The analysis also showed that alcohol had a stronger effect on women’s risk of death. For example, women who drank 65 grams or more per day had a 61% higher risk of death than men who drank the same amount.

Scientists urge people to be mindful of alcohol and not exceed the safe dose of two standard drinks per week or less. Higher alcohol consumption increases the risk of cancer, heart disease and stroke.
