The new terms will require companies to pay to access Reddit conversations for AI training purposes only, with exact amounts to be announced in the coming weeks.
The API will remain free for developers working on bots and other Reddit tools, and researchers working on academic or nonprofit projects.
Steve Huffman, the founder and CEO of Reddit, stated that Reddit’s dataset is very valuable. Reddit comments and conversations have been a rich resource for training major AI language models, with ChatGPT and Google’s Bard citing Reddit data as one of its sources.
