The Federal Court of Brazil reversed the decision of the world court to block the Telegram messenger in the country three days after the decision.
According to G1, federal judge Flavio Lucas considered the total ban on the use of the messenger in the country “unreasonable”. According to him, this “will interfere with the freedom of communication of thousands of people who have no relationship with the facts investigated.”
At the same time, the judge confirmed the daily fine of 1 million reais (about $200,000), imposed by the first instance for Telegram’s refusal to provide data on the channel’s participants with neo-Nazi content.
On April 26, a Brazilian court ruled to block Telegram. The police demanded that the company hand over the data of the channel members allegedly involved in the attack on a school in Aracruz, in which four people died.
According to G1, Telegram provided some of the information, but did not disclose the phone numbers of the community managers.
This week, Telegram founder Pavel Durov allowed Telegram to leave Brazil. The businessman said local laws go against the messenger’s mission to preserve privacy and freedom of expression around the world.
