In a new study published in PNAS, Chinese scientists from Zhejiang University examined how frequent consumption of fried foods affects people’s mental health. It turns out that there is a link between continued consumption of fried potatoes and a higher risk of depression and anxiety.
People who ate french fries frequently were 12% more likely to develop anxiety and 7% more likely to be depressed. The association between fried food and mental health problems was particularly strong in men and young adults.
According to the researchers, this effect of eating french fries is most likely related to acrylamide. This substance is known to cause cancer in animals exposed to very high doses. True, it is not yet completely clear what kind of danger this substance poses to humans.
However, eating fried foods can often lead to high cholesterol, high blood pressure and obesity. In addition, all these problems can affect the mental health of the person.
