Some Russian banks that fell under Western restrictions have stopped issuing cards of the Chinese UnionPay payment system. In particular, due to US blocking sanctions, MTS-Bank and Uralsib stopped issuing such cards, Izvestia learned.
As convinced by the publication, the UnionPay cards disappeared from those available on the websites of these organizations. The support service confirmed that your registration has been cancelled. MTS Bank noted that the reason was the inability to pay with such cards abroad.
Today, only seven Russian banks continue to operate abroad. Among them are Rosselkhozbank, Gazprombank, Post Bank, Russian Standard, Solidarity, Promsvyazbank and RRDB. But the cards of these banks are not accepted everywhere. “Performance depends on the issuer,” say participants in profile chats at UnionPay.
Bank St. Petersburg, Primorye and Zenit also fell under US blocking sanctions. The organizations did not stop issuing UnionPay cards, but warned that they could only be used in the Russian Federation.
Getting on the US SDN list means blocking all assets located in the United States and stopping all dollar transactions. After Washington announced these restrictions, credit institutions recommended that customers withdraw funds from UnionPay cards.
