A decade before the start of drilling of the famous Kola super-deep well, a similar country was undertaken in the United States – in many respects, in order to get ahead of the USSR. In 1957, ocean physicist Walter Munch hypothesized that the boundaries of Mohorović are closer to the seabed than to land. And therefore, for the sake of its achievements, it is necessary to drill the bark of panet under water, at great depths.

Drilling project Mohol

The project was named “Mohol” from the names of the geophysicist Mohorovichich and the English word “hole” (hole, well). Officially, the US National Academy of Sciences was involved in its implementation, but in fact almost all the equipment was provided by a consortium of oil producers. They were the Bureau’s groundbreaking, ever-unsupported platform, perfected overnight for emotional relief, guided by sonar signals.

The drilling site was chosen near Guadalupe, at a depth of 3.5 km. A total of 5 wells were drilled, with an expected depth of 180 m. Scientists have collected a lot of new data on the structure of the earth’s crust, not a single project has changed due to cost overruns. The borders of Morovichich have not yet been estimated, which is not surprising – the approximation of the distance to it is about 5 km.
