Russian scientists, whose work was published in the journal Diversity, learned that pond snails living in hot springs quickly form special ecological “races”.

Pond snails are common inhabitants of freshwaters that can survive temperatures of up to 40°C and hibernate in the winter. Regardless of the season, they remain active and reproduce in hot springs. However, in order to exist in such special conditions, a living organism must develop certain adaptation options.

Researchers from St. Petersburg State University, Academician NP of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Such pond snails turned out to be much smaller than their relatives in “ordinary” reservoirs, and in some the shape of the shells also changed.

Experts emphasize that the study carried out allows us to argue that not subspecies or special pool snails live in the hot springs, but ecological races with their own characteristics. These dwarf breeds spawn at “spots” where hot springs are.
