Apple Vision Pro on everyone’s lips after their performance at keynote address inaugural WWDC 2023. California augmented reality glasses will hit the market only early next year and will cost at least $3499. In addition, they will initially be sold in the United States, and no information has been received about a possible international launch.
Yesterday during lighting hypertext, we tell you in detail everything about the Vision Pro itself, as well as its new visionOS operating system. Of course, after the presentation of the device, many questions arose, and one of them is of great curiosity: He headset compatible with glasses or contact lenses?
It’s a question Californians have only half solved. The simplest and most incomplete answer is yes, Apple Vision Pro can be used by people who require permanent glasses due to vision problems. In fact, the company has developed a very interesting solution in collaboration with Zeiss to achieve this goal.
The problem is that you still don’t know to what extent Apple Vision Pro will support the use of prescription glasses. Moreover, the people of Cupertino have already explained on their website that not all ophthalmic prescriptions are compatible with their augmented reality glasses. However, they did not provide more detailed information on this matter.
Apple Vision Pro can be used with Zeiss prescription lenses.
As we stated earlier, visually impaired people will be able to use the Apple Vision Pro with special accessories designed by Zeiss and customized to suit their needs. They are known as Zeiss Optical Inserts and magnetically attach to the lenses of the augmented reality goggles, providing accurate viewing and eye tracking.
The latter is very important, given that navigation through visionOS and applications is done with the eyes. Let’s not forget that the Apple Vision Pro includes infrared sensors and LED illuminators inside, where the screens are located exclusively for eye scanning.
But let’s not deviate from the main point. The fine print on the Apple Vision Pro website makes it clear that not all that glitters is gold. “A valid prescription is required. Not all recipes are compatible, indicates. This means that Zeiss optical inserts will not be a suitable option for everyone who needs permanent prescription glasses.
What we don’t know yet is whether this is a technical limitation, ie. headset does not work properly due to glass thickness with too large a prescription, for example, or if the use of Apple Vision Pro is not recommended for conditions such as myopia, astigmatism, farsightedness, etc., due to possible adverse effects.
Another aspect to consider is that additional lenses developed by Zeiss will be sold separately. At this point, Apple hasn’t said how much they’ll cost, but given the price of the Vision Pro, it’s unlikely they’ll be cheap.
