New European Union rules establish that apps have more universal access to new services and thus avoid monopolies and help cross-platform integration. That’s why, whatsapp The latest Android beta (version 2.23.19.8) released today reportedly brings a new screen called third-party chats. WABetaInfo.

According to the company, the screen is currently not working and is not available to users. WABetaInfo. But its name is a strong hint that it’s likely the first step toward making encrypted messaging app Meta cross-platform compatible.

The beta comes just days after the European Commission confirmed that the owner of WhatsApp Meta meets the definition of a “gatekeeper” under the EU Digital Markets Act (DMA), which requires communications software as WhatsApp interacts with third-party apps for messaging by March 2024. The DMA requires gatekeepers to, among other things, allow users to remove pre-installed apps or purchase alternative app stores.
