They were officially unveiled on Tuesday. new iPhone 15. The family consists of four different models: the standard iPhone 15 and the Pro, Pro Max and Plus versions. Each of them has a certain price and characteristics.

However, there was something that particularly caught our attention. In Europe, as in other markets, The price of this new family was lower than that of the iPhone 14. Something that many did not expect.

However, if you know how the company works, this is to be expected. And no, this is not a question of demand or a change in strategy. The key to lower iPhone 15 prices is mainly the money market.

Version iPhone 14 (September 2022) iPhone 15 (September 2023) Difference
Standard 1009 euros 959 euros 50 euros less than the latest version
Plus 1159 euros 1109 euros 50 euros less than the latest version
About 1319 euros 1219 euros 100 euros less than the latest version
About Max 1469 euros 1469 euros The difference is zero euros, but now it has 256 GB instead of 128 GB.

How Apple sets prices

Prices for the iPhone 14 in the US have remained unchanged compared to the previous generation. However, in Europe – as in other countries – we have had a noticeable price increase. The reason, as I explained in my iPhone 14 review back then, was not greed, as many claimed. The key point was the dollar-euro exchange rate.

In 2022, the global economic situation – inflation, war in Ukraine, etc. – led to the fall of the euro against the dollar. And that forced Apple to raise prices in Europe if it wanted to earn the same amount for a phone sold in Spain as it would for a phone sold in California.

The way Apple sets prices is relatively simple. First, decide how much you want to charge for the product in the United States. based on various factors. It then converts this figure into the currency of each country it operates in – according to current exchange rates and future forecasts. Finally, add the taxes applicable in each region (VAT, tariffs – if they exist – etc.).

Why is iPhone 15 cheaper?

In September 2022, when the iPhone 14 was released, The dollar/euro exchange rate was particularly detrimental for Europeans. However, the euro has strengthened significantly since then, as can be seen in the chart below, making possible the price drop we saw on the iPhone 15:

Evolution of the euro-dollar from September 1 to the present. Since then, the euro has clearly strengthened.

So knowing this money market situation and how Apple operates, This downward price change was predictable.. The only exception is the iPhone 15 Pro Max, the base version of which has increased in price by $100 in the US and is now sold with 256 GB by default. In this case, the increase applied in the local market offset the drop expected by the current exchange rate, thus maintaining the same price as its predecessor. However, in the rest of the range we see a fall from 50 to 100 euros. And this is, without a doubt, great news.
