This idea has been in the air for several years now. Tesla is preparing a surprise product: a cell phone that competes with Android and iOS.

However, Elon Musk had a fairly frank conversation in Joe Rogan Podcastwhere he admitted that several things would have to happen for the EV brand’s phone concept to be born.

“No, we don’t make a phone,” Musk told a comedian from the Joe Rogan Experience. The billionaire added that Tesla is “probably” in a better position to build a non-Android or non-iOS smartphone than other companies, pointing to the automaker’s software.

“But it’s not something we want to do unless we have to or something,” he explained.

Of course, Elon Musk has made it clear what condition number 1 would have to be for something like this to happen:

“If Apple and Google cut Android and started doing really bad things, like, I don’t know, censoring apps or… acting like gatekeepers in a really bad way, then I think we’d make a phone (sic)” , he commented in his messianic tone: “I want to save the world.”

A new question arises: can you have a successful mobile phone outside of these two ecosystems? It’s difficult, but not impossible; we’d call it news development.
