The new function allows iPhone users to connect to satellites to trigger a local emergency. Ideal for places where there is no mobile or Wi-Fi connection.🇧🇷 With the innovation, it is also possible to share location with your contacts through the Buscar application.

iPhone 14 Satellite Emergency SMS works with a combination of software and hardware and is supported by Globalstar’s satellite network, ground stations and human personnel.

However, the user does not have some kind of “satellite cell phone” at hand, as the function is for emergencies. Like this, can’t make calls or even send regular messages to contacts🇧🇷

How to use Satellite Emergency SOS?

To use Satellite Emergency SMS on iPhone, the user simply dials the local emergency number in an unconnected area. The smartphone should then display a message and an icon to send an SMS asking for help.

By answering a questionnaire, it is necessary to indicate the reason for the emergency communication in the system itself. The user can optionally also activate the emergency contacts stored in the mobile phone. From there, the system will indicate where the device needs to be pointed in order to connect to a satellite.

However, Apple points out that the function may take about 15 seconds for a message to actually be sent, although this time can still be extended. “Satellites move fast, have low bandwidth and are located thousands of kilometers from Earth, so text messages can take minutes to transmit,” the company said in a statement.

The novelty is available in the “Settings” application within the “Emergency SOS” option. It is not possible to see an activation option as it is not available so far in Brazil.
