The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has published a temperature forecast for the second half of August and the first week of September in Spain. It is bad news. During this period, from 14 to 20 August, the temperatures will not be as suffocating as in the first half of the month, but the minimum values will still be quite high. And the heat is resisting in some areas.
These are normal temperatures for this time of year in most of the Iberian Peninsula. Also remember that we will have some cloud cover except for northern Galicia and the Cantabrian Sea with minimal rainfall. The same is true in the depths of the peninsula.
In the Canary Islands, the heat does not go away. Although temperatures will begin to drop after August 13, the minimum in some areas it cannot fall below 28-30°C. Fog is also expected in the archipelago, which will not help improve temperatures.
There will be no rain in the next few weeks due to the heat
Aemet forecasts indicate that no rain is expected for at least the next 20-25 days, except for the aforementioned areas: northern Galicia and the Cantabrian Sea. The drought experienced by many regions of the world is another consequence of heatwaves intensified by human-induced climate change.
July 2023 is already considered the hottest month in Earth’s history since records were kept. August is not expected to break that record, but we are still seeing the devastation caused by a lack of rain and increased drought causing wildfires and loss of life, as happened recently in Hawaii.
