How to create placeholder text in Word

Microsoft Word has many layout options. In fact, an advanced user can use the application to create a document that is unrecognizable from the point of view of any inexperienced user. This is a tool full of tricks.

But if you’ve spent years perfecting your design, you’ll probably want to test it out with dummy text before you actually start writing. You don’t want to run into any unexpected formatting issues when you’re in the middle of a job. The solution is to use the Lorem Ipsum text.

How to create dummy text in Microsoft Word

To the untrained eye, it looks like Latin. While this is partly true, the text itself does not make sense. Still it is a mixed version of Cicero’s famous work of the 1st century BC. “De finibus bonorum et malorum” with a few additional words.

It has been used in printing and typography since the 1500s, but this became common in the 1960s. You can easily add Lorem Ipsum text in Word, just follow the steps below:

• Open Microsoft Word.
• Place the cursor where you want to add text.
• Enter =lorem().
• Press Enter.

By default, the code will add three paragraphs with three lines each. You can change these values ​​by adding numbers in brackets.

The first digit refers to paragraphs; the second, to the lines. For example, =lorem(6,8) will create six paragraphs of eight lines each, and =lorem(2,10) will create two paragraphs of 10 lines each.

You can edit and format Lorem Ipsum text after adding it, using the same tools and keyboard shortcuts that you use to edit regular text.
