Siemens invests $25 million and buys a minority stake in US wireless charging technology supplier WiTricity. Together, they want to spur innovation in emerging markets for wireless charging of electric vehicles. According to Siemens, this market will reach $2 billion in volume by 2028 in North America and Europe alone.
The two companies want to close the gaps in the global standardization of wireless charging for electric vehicles. This will ensure interoperability between tools and infrastructure. In addition, both parties said they will work together to support the technical development of wireless charging systems.
Toyota has held shares in WiTricity since 2011. The 2013 license agreement allows the automaker to offer wireless chargers in its rechargeable, hybrid and electric vehicles. However, this has not happened so far.
