Windows 11 is getting support for tabs in explorer with the Sun Valley 2 update (version 22H2) released this fall. In addition to tabs, navigator provides the addition of a new navigation sidebar.

The new explorer has since migrated to beta versions of Windows 11 and the Dev channel. The new tabs feature is enabled by default and allows the user to easily switch between different windows. It’s a bit like tabs used in internet browsers.

Compared to a full-fledged new window, a new tab in explorer uses less working memory. Opening a new tab only increases memory consumption by one MB.

The new feature will be available to every user directly in Windows 11 22H2.
