Last Saturday, May 25th, took place in Barcelona first bird convention From Spain. Bird deniers emerged in 2017 in the United States, but their followers have since spread throughout the world. His arrival in our country caused amazement, but not too much surprise, since, unfortunately, we are more than accustomed to ridiculous conspiracies. However, it has a feature that most don’t have: it parody.
The creator of the movement was a young university student named Peter McIndoewho was in feminist demonstration when he had an idea. He took the banner, unfurled it and wrote: “Birds do not exist.” He soon attracted the attention of all media.
Since the joke seemed to go deeper than he expected, he decided to flesh out the story. He came up with a whole conspiracy theory according to which birds were destroyed US government and later replaced by dronesto keep the population under control. Gradually, he hired actors to follow him in his story and even create merchandise, from the sales of which he received funds to make the ball bigger and bigger. He even left the university and devoted himself exclusively to his plot. Finally, in 2021, he told the truth and has since dedicated himself to talking about the reasons that prompted him to do so. Because it was actually more than that joke written on banner. There is a lot of backstory behind the bird deniers.
The parody that fueled bird deniers
McIndoe actually had a justification behind this innocent act. As he himself recounted in later conversations, he grew up in very conservative and religious societyin which almost everyone around believed in some kind of conspiracy theory.
With his parody, he wanted to show how these movements are created. Bird deniers began to take on a life of their own. More and more crazy ideas appeared. They were no longer just surveillance drones, they were using their feces to fumigate us, like the famous chemtrail planes. Everything fits.
Most of the movement’s followers were pranksters like him, dedicated to following the parody. However, there were those who believed in it. He and his followers tried to make everything about bird denial, exaggeration, which is very difficult to believe. But this did not stop us from finding people who fell for the deception and wanted to follow it. That’s not the case for bird deniers this weekend. Barcelona. In their case, as it turned out, it was still a group of people who wanted to continue the parody. The saddest thing about this whole story is that many of us have doubts about its veracity. It seems plausible to us that in a world where there are people who deny the existence of snow, the clitoris, or even the moon, there are bird deniers. This is the main complaint of this parody. In fact, this is not the first time this has happened.
A case of fecomagnetism
We had our bird deniers in Spain, although in their case the parody was not against conspiracy theories, but against pseudoscience. Two science communicators Mariano Collantes and Fernando Cerverainvented a pseudotherapy called fecomagetism.
This supposedly involved using feces and magnets to cure all sorts of ailments. They were based on premises such as that pigs roll in their feces to be healthier. There would be a reason for that. Everything they published about this was a lie. From product images to the supposed research they are based on. A little investigation would have revealed that it was all a lie. However, many media outlets took this as truth. They were even invited to present their products at fair of esotericism and alternative treatments.
With this they wanted to demonstrate how far pseudotherapy can go. How something directly invented can penetrate so much that it attracts many followers. This is very similar to the case of bird deniers. People who use humor to show that just because something gets followers and comes with sources and photos doesn’t necessarily prove it’s true. We must have a critical spirit in the face of the unknown because It’s not hard to deceive people. These people left crumbs behind their backs to be discovered, but there were people who did not do this. Those who deliberately hide the truth are much more difficult to expose. This is why we must be careful.
