Over the past 20 years, breast cancer survival has increased exponentially due to advances in both treatment and diagnostic techniques. These figures refer to developed countries. Unfortunately, in countries with fewer resources, timely diagnosis can sometimes be difficult, resulting in increased mortality. This is what happens in countries like Colombia and Mexico. For this reason, two young scientists from these countries have developed a device based on artificial intelligence that allows breast cancer diagnosis quickly and easily even in areas far from hospitals.
We must remember that there are many people living in Colombia in the jungle or in the countryside very far from any medical center. Mexico is also no exception due to the fact that the population is very far from any medical center. Thanks to this device, called “I am Juliet”, these women will be able to undergo the same checks as anyone else in their same age group. In fact, it not only removes the barrier of geographic distance. It also reduces pain and eliminates radiation.
Breast cancer is usually diagnosed with a mammogram. It is non-invasive, but painful. The radiation dose is very small, but there are still people who, for one reason or another, resist testing. With Soy Julieta, these barriers disappear. It is no wonder that its two creators, at 26, have already won several awards for his invention.
Breast Cancer Diagnosis Using Artificial Intelligence
“I Am Juliet” is based on how breast tissue conducts electricity. Its two creators saw that tumor tissue but a healthy person spends it a little differently. So they trained an artificial intelligence algorithm to distinguish healthy breasts from breasts that might have tumors.
The training was typical for this type of algorithm. Breast tissue samples were taken from known diagnosis and after passing a weak electric current through it, the result was compared with the presence or absence of tumors. With all this information, the algorithm was able to learn what the parameters of the disease were in order to make a diagnosis of breast cancer using the new tissue.
The device is portable, battery powered and very easy to use. You just need to put it on your chest and the tests will take place automatically. Patients could do this themselves without needing assistance. Then the results are uploaded to the cloud directly, where they can be assessed by a professional.
The two scientists responsible for the invention Valentina Agudelo and Cristina GarciaThey named their invention after Juliet Lanteri, the first woman to vote in Argentina.
Well-deserved awards
This breast cancer diagnostic device has already won several awards. The most important are Global Awards trophy and Unlock Her Future 2024 Latam Edition award.. The latter was recently collected at the Cristal Gallery in Madrid.

Both awards were given to them for both the introduction of a new tool such as artificial intelligence and for the application of their invention to the healthcare of the most disadvantaged sections of the population. Colombian Valentina Agudelo and Mexican Cristina Garcia hope that the “Soya Julieta” will become available small rural offices or even from the population itself, if necessary. It is cheap, easy to use and very reliable. Thanks to such inventions, perhaps breast cancer survival will finally increase equally throughout the world.
