What is a supermoon?
A supermoon occurs when the Moon is at its closest point to the Earth (perigee) and the full moon occurs at the same time. When it reaches this point, the satellite appears about 14% larger and about 30% brighter than normal.
This is because the Moon’s orbit is elliptical, meaning the satellite is sometimes farther or closer to Earth. When the Moon is closest to us, it is approximately 363,300 kilometers away (average distance is 384,400 kilometers).
