Climate crisis: early heat and increasingly longer summers

The cause of global warming is the emission of greenhouse gases and the rise of intense heat waves around the world. And this seems like just the beginning of episodes of extreme heat. Climatologists say that in 2030 the chance of a heat wave is one in five and in 2060 even one in two.

Climatologist Christophe Cassou, co-author of the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, argues that the duration of heat waves determines their impact:

What we show in the IPCC report is that these heat waves last longer, summer seasons are longer and will have a greater impact – including heat waves that start early – to the extent that they pose risks to agricultural crops.

With the climate crisis, these events are happening earlier and are even more intense than in the past.
