Matheus Pires, a former participant in Globo’s No Limit programme, was diagnosed with monkeypox last Wednesday (October 6). Pires is adding to the growing numbers of the disease in Brazil, where as of this Monday (11) more than 200 confirmed cases have been recorded across the country.

Pires, who was hospitalized and isolated, could not attend the finale of the program shown on TV Globo last Thursday (7).

The former participant posted photos on social media showing traces of the disease on her face, but said she had already recovered – also revealing more scars spread throughout her body.

“My situation is one where I need to be completely isolated. Because, as you can see from the scars, I have some scars all over my body, but every day I feel a little better. I’ll be discharged soon to continue in isolation, only in my little house,” said Matheus UOL.

The pedagogical coordinator stays in the hospital and is isolated from other people; contact is only with a healthcare team equipped to prevent infections.

More than 200 cases in Brazil

Matheus Pires is just one of the people infected with monkeypox in Brazil and, According to the Ministry of Health, 219 cases of infected patients have already been confirmed. Cases were recorded in São Paulo (158), Rio de Janeiro (34), Minas Gerais (14), Paraná (3), Rio Grande do Sul (3), Ceará (2), Rio Grande do Norte (2), Goiás (2) and the Federal District (1).

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are more than 7,000 confirmed cases of monkeypox worldwide. More than 60 countries have reported infections, but most cases have been reported in Europe.

Infection can occur during secretions, skin lesions, contact with fluids, and even sexual intercourse with people infected with monkeypox.

According to current epidemic research, a few cases are related to gender among men, but this does not mean that only men or people from the LGBTQIAPN+ community can be infected by the virus.
