During the expected visit of the speaker of the United States Congress Nancy Pelosic in Taiwan, I IT service the island were knocked out by a brutal attack. It is suspected that this is the work of Chinese hackers.
It is yet another demonstration of strength – fortunately only symbolically – from China in protest against the visit of American politicians. While the plane Pelosi was traveling on was preparing to land in TaiwanChina had carried out a series of reckless “military exercises”, firing several pieces of anti-aeria and launching its fighter-bombers.
In the same hours, some sites of Taiwanese institutions were taken offline by an attack DDoSprobably led by some Chinese hacktivists – these are hackers who act for political reasons, which are not formally linked to the Chinese government.
The site of the Taiwanese presidency was particularly affected. The traffic came – explains a government spokesman – from outside the country’s borders. The Taiwan Presidency site was bombed with 200 times more traffic than usual. According to institutional sources, the outages lasted about 20 minutes, after which government technicians were able to restore normal site functions. According to some other sources – including the Engadget site – the problems actually lasted much longer.
America’s solidarity with the 23 million people living in Taiwan has never been more important, today the world faces a choice: autocracy versus democracy
