Giant aneurysm removed with 3D technique

A life-saving operation is the one in the hospital Niguarda of Milan. A young 24-year-old from Veneto underwent surgery to remove a large one aneurysm to the brain. It was 4 centimeters with a very high risk of fracture. The alarm bell was a severe headache. The operation lasted 7 hours using a 3D Surgical Exoscope. The patient was discharged 10 days after the successful surgery.

The young Venetian girl discovered the existence of the giant brain aneurysm after investigating the severe headache she suffered from. Because it was a carotid aneurysm, the Venetian doctors were unable to operate surgically. It would have served the endovascular closure of the artery, effectively causing the patient’s paralysis on the left side of the body. So they turned to the Niguarda in Milan. Seven hours before temporary closure of the carotid artery, to rule out the aneurysm and restore cerebral vessels.

The particular difficulty of this case was represented by the need to maintain flow in the anterior chorionic artery, which emanated directly from the aneurysm sac, the interruption of which was responsible for the temporary paralysis Anna suffered during the pilot test.

To keep the aneurysm out of circulation, we applied some “clips” using the surgical exoscope: a camera connected to a high-resolution 4K and 3D display that allows for a higher definition than the traditional surgical microscope .
