South Korea’s Pusan National University has declared a new truth thanks to an analysis performed. Drinks coffee it increases the risk of developing the periodontitis. It’s nothing more than ainflammation of the gums and the tissues that hold the teeth in the mouth. The analysis started with 46 studies to focus on 4 studies investigating the association between coffee and periodontitis. Two other studies instead focused on the causes of tooth loss. The studies showed no difference in the risk of periodontitis between those who drank coffee and those who didn’t, even in the amount consumed.

Nicola Discepoli, associate professor of periodontology at the University of Siena and coordinator of the scientific committee of the Italian Society of Periodontology (SIDP), explains:

Periodontitis is a pathology closely related to lifestyle such as tobacco use and oral hygiene. Since coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world, it is very important to understand its effect on the human body. Although the data on which the meta-analysis is based is limited, it is currently possible to rule out a link between periodontitis and caffeine, which on the contrary could even have a protective effect, as some studies conducted in the past have demonstrated the anti-inflammatory potential of this substance. For the time being, however, there is no reason to discourage moderate coffee intake. The most important thing is to consider the cardiovascular conditions of those who drink it, as caffeine is a risk factor for hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Attention should also be paid to adding sugars, which can be food for bacteria and promote tooth decay.
