The subjects studied are 501,376 people without dementia, with an average age of 56 years. They completed questionnaires about physical activity, but also about household chores, work, walking and cycling. Then other modules on mental activities, parenting questions, family relationships, local or club attendance, use of electronic devices. They were also asked if they had any relatives with dementia. The participants were followed for 11 years. Ultimately, 5,185 people in total developed dementia.

Individuals who exercise regularly have a 35% lower risk of dementia. Those in the household 21% and those who visit family and friends on a daily basis 15% less.
