A recent study found that a vegetarian diet could expose women to a greater risk of fracture untilhip. A 33% higher risk than those who are omnivorous. More than 26,000 middle-aged British women were involved in the study. Next, the team analyzed hip fracture risk in pescetarians and vegetarians.
Out of a total of 26,318 women aged 35 to 69, 822 hip fracture cases were examined over a 20-year period. Scientists will have to elaborate, but it turns out that vegetarians are the only subgroup at higher risk of hip fractures.
Our potential work highlights concerns about hip rupture risk in women following a vegetarian diet. This should not lead to a demonization of this diet. We recommend everyone to take the proper precautions to follow a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
James Webster, head of the research team
Hip fractures are a global health problem with high economic costs. Dietary restrictions have often been linked to reduced bone health, but our study is a first step in identifying a link with hip rupture risk.
Janet Cade, Webster’s colleague and co-author
This work is part of the bigger picture of how eating habits can reduce bone and muscle health. More research will be needed to assess the risks of hip fracture in men, including the factor related to body weight and also the differences between vegetarians and omnivores.
