Although diesel is gas really efficient in terms of kilometers traveled per liter used (more than engine gas). But this does not mean that its performance cannot be improved. Only for this we will have to use some hydrogen.

Engineers at the University of New South Wales in Sydney managed to re-engineer the engine diesel in a hybrid hydrogen-diesel engine, thereby reducing CO₂ emissions by more than 85%.

The School of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering spent about 18 months developing a hydrogen and diesel direct injection system that allows existing diesel engines to run on 90% hydrogen gas.

The researchers say that any diesel engine used in trucks and power equipment in the transportation, agricultural and mining industries can be adapted to the new hybrid system in just a couple of months.

Produced using clean, renewable energy sources such as wind and solar, green hydrogen is much more environmentally friendly than diesel.

In an article published in Tech Xplore, Professor Cook’s team demonstrates thatThe use of a patented hydrogen injection system reduces CO₂ emissions to just 90 g/kWh, an 85.9% reduction. than a diesel engine.

Direct high pressure hydrogen injection

The UNSW team solved the problem by keeping the original diesel fuel injection into the engine, but adding hydrogen fuel injection directly into the cylinder.

The study showed that direct injection of hydrogen, specifically on schedule monitors the state of the mixture inside the engine cylinder, which eliminates the harmful emissions of nitrogen oxides that have been a major barrier to the commercialization of hydrogen engines.

Importantly, the new dual-fuel hydrogen-diesel direct injection system does not require the ultra-high purity hydrogen that alternative hydrogen fuel cell systems must use and are more expensive to produce.

In addition, diesel-hydrogen hybrid efficiency has been shown to increase by more than 26% compared to existing diesel engines. The research team hopes to be able to commercialize the new system in the next 12-24 months. and ready to advise potential investors.
