The award was given for its clever design in interactive display technology.
The device stood out as the world’s first smart aquarium. use a virtual-real fusion technology to view simultaneous information of observed marine life, using eye tracking to determine the viewing angle of visitors. It is the tenth time ITRI has been awarded at CES since its first participation in 2018.
According to the website of Taiwan’s technology research and development agency, AI Aquarium’s technology has been successfully installed in the National Museum of Marine Science and Technology in that island province. In addition to educational fun, the principles used in the aquarium can also be applied in surgical simulations for medical education.
How does the ITRI artificial intelligence aquarium work?
There is an outward-facing 3D depth-sensing camera above the aquarium to know where the viewer is looking. Another camera is aimed at the aquarium to monitor the position of the fish. It is this real-time video analyzed by object recognition algorithm, to compare observed fish with a database.
Combining information from the observer’s field of view with the location of the fish, AI Aquarium detects exactly which fish has been seen and searches for the species it belongs to. The taxonomic classification is automatically displayed on a transparent microLED display placed on the glass. right next to the fish being analyzed.
The ITRI aquarium can identify aquatic species with an accuracy of 98%, as well as provide more information about the observed animal. For this, it is enough for the observer to make simple movements with his hands, no need to touch the glass. Edwin Liu, president of the Taiwanese company, assures that the AI Aquarium offers “a more interactive and effective option than traditional aquariums.”
