Open source technology company Red Hat has released Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9. The update to the widely used Linux-based enterprise operating system provides businesses with additional protection against security vulnerabilities.

The latest version of the operating system includes hardware-level features that address vulnerabilities such as Specter and Meltdown. It is possible to identify areas of memory that potentially malicious code cannot access. For example, there is support for security protocols from various authorities for payment transactions and healthcare. There are standard system roles for easy configuration of a system such as firewall, sql server or web console.

The integrity measurement architecture monitors changes in the operating system with hashes and signatures to detect unwanted changes. Kernel live patch allows kernel updates to be applied to multiple systems without requiring a full reboot.

The tech company also announced at the Red Hat Summit that it will increase its focus on edge computing. To that end, it has introduced a handful of tools that can help businesses of all kinds transition to Linux.

This is the first release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux based on CentOS Stream, available for free after the manufacturer redefined the relationship between CentOS and RHEL. CentOS is being developed by Red Hat in collaboration with the community, and Enterprise Linux will come a little later in terms of added features. Fedora Linux is a community developed but sponsored by Red Hat. Fedora Linux 36 is now available with the main add-on GNOME 42 desktop environment and a new screenshot tool.
