After months of rumors, Sony has finally announced the first major redesign of the PlayStation 5. The announcement came out of the blue thanks to a simple statement on the official PlayStation blog. If you are interested in purchasing it, it is important that you know everything differences with a version that is still on the market. Then we’ll compare the new PS5 Slim with the previous model.
It is pertinent to note that, unlike previous generations, Sony has not named the redesign PS5 Slim. This is quite interesting because, according to the company, volume has decreased significantly. In any case, in this post we will call it that way to distinguish it from the traditional model.
Let’s start with the first big difference: the PS5 Slim has a new design that makes it lighter and more compact. Compared to traditional PlayStation 5, PS5 Slim reduced overall volume by 30%. The dimensions of the disc edition are 358x96x216 mm (the previous model was 390x104x260 mm), and the digital edition is 358x80x216 mm (the previous model was 390x92x260 mm).
Weight, in turn, decreased by 18 and 24% in the disk version and in the digital version, respectively. The new PS5 with disc weighs approximately 3.2 kg (700 grams less compared to the 2022 revision), and digital – 2.6 kg (800 grams less).
Be careful, the above does not mean that some components have been sacrificed inside to achieve a more compact size. So its performance remains exactly the same.. However, once it hits the market in November, it will be interesting to check out its internals for other changes.
From the outside you can see 4 independent panels, separated by a cut – unlike the traditional version, in which there were only two panels. There is a reason for this curious design decision. The lower right panel can be removed to accommodate an Ultra HD Blu-Ray drive for the digital model.

This idea is quite interesting and unprecedented for a Sony console. If you decide to buy the digital version first but later want to enjoy the games in physical format, you now have the option purchase the drive separately. Will cost $79.99 or €119.99..
Will there be replaceable panels like the traditional PS5? Yes, sure. They will be available for $55 USD/EUR sometime in 2024 in matte black, volcanic red, cobalt blue and silver.
Another key point is that Sony designed the PS5 Slim to be used straight out of the box in a landscape position. Actually this time The package does not include a stand for vertical placement.. But if you’d rather have a huge tower next to your TV, the vertical stand can be purchased separately. Its price: 30 dollars/euro.

Finally, you should know that the PS5 Slim has finally arrived 1 TB storage. The original model had 825 GB. Okay, it doesn’t make much of a difference, but in a time when games weigh in at huge scales, any addition is appreciated – just ask. war zone—.
What about the price? There have been no changes in this regard. PS5 Slim with disc tray can be yours $499.99 or €549.99. The digital edition will be released on $449.99/EUR. Both will available from next November and will replace the models currently available in stores. Below are several comparison tables depending on the model:
