Both the Galaxy S22 Plus and Galaxy S22 Ultra are likely to be the most recommended Android phones in their segment. The step forward the South Korean brand took in 2021 with the much-lauded Galaxy S21 has been stepped up with this new family of devices that, while familiar in many ways, refines what was a successful formula.
Of these two new models The Galaxy S22 Ultra is without a doubt the most eye-catching.. Both in terms of its technical characteristics, which I will talk about later, and in design, which differs both from the rest of the family and from its predecessor.
However, the exterior finish of the Galaxy S22 Ultra conveys familiar sensations. And I don’t mean it as a negative. The mobile phone is an upgraded version of the Galaxy Note 10+ and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. Two phones that, in turn, resemble another iconic smartphone: Nokia Lumia 920. What do they have in common? A peculiar combination of curved sides with a completely flat top and bottom.
This philosophy, combined with the superb sophistication of the case, allows the Galaxy S22 Ultra to achieve that feeling off-road car so peculiar to the family with whom this happens spiritually – Galaxy Note. Feels like a product for sure premium, durable, able to react to any situation… A technologically advanced Swiss army knife that does not neglect aesthetics. A kind of Range Rover on the phone.

If I were to continue the automotive analogy, its little brother, the Galaxy S22+, would probably be the equivalent of the undeniably aesthetic Ferrari Roma. It’s sophisticated, modern, premium and attractive.
And yes, the aesthetics of this model are not exactly revolutionary compared to what we saw a year ago. But what is not visible in the images is the refinement process that Samsung has done with this product. The choice and processing of materials is more precise, the aluminum sides are flatter, the color range is quite attractive, the bezels surrounding the screen are kept to a minimum of expressiveness… These are all minor improvements, which, nevertheless, they quite noticeably affect the aftertaste that leaves product after spending a few minutes with it.
Personally, I must admit that, if I had to settle for one – considering only its aesthetics – I would choose the S22+.. Just like I would prefer a Ferrari Roma Range Rover. The identity that Samsung defined with the Galaxy S21 was something I liked very much at the time, so this upgraded version had every chance of repeating its success.
shines where always
In the field of screens, the praise is repeated again with this Galaxy S22. Samsung is without a doubt the leading company when it comes to OLED screens for smartphones it means. And just when it looks like they’ve reached the top, they surprise us again with an even more advanced panel.
In short, the screens that the Galaxy S22 has are exceptional. Large size, very bright, well calibrated, more energy efficient, compatible with multiple video standards in HDR, up to 120Hz dynamic refresh rate, etc.
Samsung always shines with Galaxy S screens. And this new generation is no exception.
Normally, the Ultra’s screen is a bit more advanced in some ways (e.g. QHD+ instead of FHD+), though unless you’re knowledgeable or picky, you probably won’t notice the difference.
As always, it’s screeching that Samsung turns on a mode that oversaturates colors by default, but it’s honestly a losing battle. If you want to be fidelity, go to system settings and change the display profile to be as neutral as possible. This way, you’ll see the content as the creator actually created it, or edit the images properly.
In the case of the Galaxy S22 Ultra, its panel is also S-Pen compatiblewhich in this generation is submerged in the device’s own chassis – unlike the Galaxy S21 Ultra, which was also compatible, but for storage stylus-.
Is the S-Pen useful? The answer is that it depends a lot on who you are and what you do with your phone. Personally, I find it useful in certain situations – like editing a photo – but nothing more. However, I know people who get a lot out of it. If this is your case, having it on your device now will please you.
When it comes to performance, Few people can complain about two phones with the latest Exynos chip.. Day in and day out, everything runs smoothly on these phones. However, two points need to be made:
- First, the Qualcomm model, which is not sold in Europe, still outperforms the Exynos variant. The difference isn’t worrisome, but it’s a pity that this region is once again getting a decidedly worse option.
- Secondly, both Samsung and Qualcomm have an unresolved issue to achieve more stable performance as this new generation of chips heats up relatively easily and as a result degrades phone performance quickly. In most cases this is not a problem, but should not be criticized either. Especially when you consider that companies like Apple manage to keep productivity going.

And how are the cameras? Well, honestly to what is expected from a product from a brand like Samsung with such a high cost. In the case of the Galaxy S22 Ultra, this is not surprising, since the previous model showed great strength in this area; but a step forward is appreciated in the case of the S22+, which includes a new main sensor as well as an updated telephoto lens that is optical this year, rather than a hybrid or digital as in previous cases.
The fact that it is optical, although it may seem insignificant, is important. How a lens with a focal length of 70-75mm distorts the image is different from how a lens with a focal length of 20-25mm distorts it. And you can see it when you take a picture.
In general, both phones give very good results in both night and day shooting. Samsung’s processing flair is noticeable in some aspects of processing, although the processing is far less aggressive than it used to be when the South Korean brand tended to oversaturate images, for example. To be honest, these are cameras I would trust on the road as they are advanced enough and stable enough that I don’t have to worry about them.
In the case of the Galaxy S22 Ultra, I have to give special mention to its 10x telephoto lens, which offers additional versatility and also performs well in a wide range of situations. Personally, I love that Samsung continues to bet on these long telephoto lenses without ditching intermediate points like the 3X.. Moreover: I would like to see this idea spread to other brands, such as Google or Apple.
As for the video, the results are quite acceptable. The problem is that here both Samsung and other brands are several steps behind Apple. If you take the North American company out of the equation, the videos shot with the S22 are pretty good. Probably one of the best in its segment. But if you bring the iPhone 13 into comparison, then it is completely unbalanced.
Made to Last Longer
Another interesting feature of the Galaxy S22 lies in its software. Yes, they come with the latest version of Android. And also with the latest OneUI. But that’s not what’s important: it’s Samsung’s commitment that these phones will get four major Android updates – that is, they will reach Android 16 – and five years of security updates.
This step forward is great news for buyers of this phone. Especially since renewal periods are getting longer and top phones tend to last a long time without incident. other brands smartphones Android should take the same position.
More brands should follow the path of Samsung, which has supported its products for so long.
Finally, autonomy. And in this field we can make both positive and negative readings. The positive is that both phones are capable of finishing a day of normal use without any problems. On the negative side, competing phones like the iPhone 13 series are able to last longer under similar usage patterns.
Thankfully, both models support wireless charging as well as up to 45W fast charging, so power can be restored quite easily. Of course: in case someone clueless doesn’t know, neither of the two phones has a charger in the box.
Should you buy the new Galaxy S22+ and Galaxy S22 Ultra?
I have no hesitation in declaring that both the Galaxy S22+ and Galaxy S22 Ultra They are a safe bet in their segment. And, in the case of the Ultra, it’s probably the absolute best phone we’ll see in the first half of the year.
That does not mean that they are perfect or idyllic in every way. Details like battery life, video or sustained CPU performance could be better. But both models make up for it with pretty good cameras, top-notch screens, and improved bodies, among other things.

The competition, yes, is not quite meager. Apple’s iPhone 13 series is undoubtedly its main competitor, as it has been in previous years. And some offerings from both Xiaomi and Oppo could also hurt sales if they play their cards right. So despite the sheer strength of new products, Samsung can’t rely on its go-to-market strategies – and manufacturing, given the chip shortage – if it wants to turn the good work it’s done with both phones into sales.
