After much discussion and controversy, the Academy decided: Will SmithAs a result of last night’s events at the Oscars, he will be banned from all activities of the association for ten years, including, of course, the Academy Awards. A measure that certainly does not go to the subtle, justified with the following statement:
The 94th Oscars were meant to be a celebration of the many members of our community who did an incredible job last year; however, those moments were overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behavior we saw Mr. Smith perform on stage.
We did not handle the situation properly during the broadcast. We apologize for this. This was an opportunity for us to set an example for our guests, for our viewers, and for our Academy family around the world, and we didn’t succeed. Unprepared for the unexpected never seen before.
The award just received will not be revoked, but the ten-year ban weighs heavily on the career of the actor, who in recent days had shown remorse, apologized and himself resigned from the Academy itself, who however, it didn’t stop him from being nominated or invited. Despite everything, it seems that it’s still technically possible for Smith to be nominated and even win, as unlikely as it may seem, at least for the foreseeable future. Smith and his lawyers have not yet issued a ruling on the just-released decision.
