Nvidia announced New AI technology that improves player interactions with non-player characters (NPCs) in games. The innovation was unveiled this Monday (29), during the brand’s conference at the Computex trade show in Taiwan.

Named Nvidia ACE (Avatar Cloud Engine), feature allows developers to add NPCs that talk to players in real time. Chatbots like ChatGPT and Google Bard will be used instead of script dialogs.

“You can bring NPCs to life using NeMo model alignment techniques. First, use behavior cloning to allow the language model to perform role-playing tasks as instructed.

Another interesting point is Nvidia ACE will make it possible to match characters’ facial animations with unwritten dialogue. An element that should increase the naturalness of interactions.

According to Nvidia, a human feedback reinforcement learning system will be used to adjust the behavior of NPCs. This will allow designers to receive real-time feedback during title development.

Also, the brand claims that AI NPCs are controlled by NeMo Guardrails. The platform will prevent characters from saying weird or offensive things to players.

As seen above, Nvidia showcased a demo of its ACE technology and Convai platform for AI character creation at Computex. While the teaser isn’t perfect, the speech patterns of NPCs will become more natural in the future.

There is currently no information on when the ACE feature will be available to game developers. However, the innovation is expected to change the way players interact with NPCs.
