Renowned insider Kamila Wojciechowska discovered that the Tensor G2 used in Google’s mid-range model is a simplified variation of the G2 chip.
The main difference lies in the packaging technology of the SoC Pixel 7a. Google chose the IPoP (integrated panel on package) technology used by Samsung in the 2018 Galaxy S9, while the Tensor G2 on the Pixel 7 used the more advanced FOPLP-PoP (fan-out panel level packaging) technology.
The use of IPoP technology makes the chips bulkier and thicker than FOPLP chips. They also tend to get hotter.
At the same time, there is no difference in performance between the two processors. That’s why both Pixel 7a and Pixel 7 show comparable results in processor benchmarks.
