Engineers from the Swiss research institute EPFL are developing a new surgical unit. Similar assistance systems for surgeons are already working, but unlike them, the novelty provides four manipulator arms, not two. One paramanipulator will be controlled by the doctor’s hands, the other, additional, by his legs.

This approach, according to the opinion, allows one single person to do the work of two or three people. The two main manipulators are based on the use of surgical instruments such as the sakalpel and the retractor. At the bottom of the installation with inspection are two pedals. One of them controls the endoscope camera, and the second takes the place of capture. Actuators in the inflammation pedal cause a tactile connection with the user, which allows you to deal with sensitive areas of the patient’s body much more delicately.

The system can partially “predict” the action of the surgeon, that a significant increase in manipulation and overall perception of quality is due to work. Of course, the management of such a robotic system requires honed skills and looks difficult. However, this access opens up entirely new possibilities for surgeons during laparoscopic procedures.
